Mayor John Moran is helping to bridge the funding for the project.

The Mayor has committed to funding the upgrading of a green space on Island Road.

The area marks the spot of the original moat that ran along the city walls.

The funding of approximately €75,000 from the Mayor's discretionary fund will bridge funding gaps in the project, allowing it to proceed this year.

Additional grant support is being provided by the Local Authorities Waters programme and the Council’s Environment and Climate Action department.

The project will create a 'nature based solution' to protect a green space and direct road surface water into a new landscape park instead of the sewer.

The water will be stored beneath the gravel for planting beds, which will create food and shelter for wildlife.

The project will also see the formation of a natural play area for use by children at the nearby St Mary’s National School and the wider community.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran explains his support for the project: “We have a broad strategy in the More for Limerick programme to improve the surrounding areas and provide better amenities and public realm across King’s Island. This project is a step forward towards actioning that plan. It improves access to and enjoyment of our historic walls for young and old alike. By investing in projects like this, we’re putting the pieces of community, history and sustainability neatly together. I can’t wait to see what the pupils of St Mary’s NS make of the new facilities!”

Local school principal Eoghan O'Byrne of St Mary’s National School is delighted with the news: “We are thrilled to see the exciting development of a new fosse along Island Road, directly adjacent to St. Mary’s National School. This transformative project, made possible through the generous support of Limerick City and County Council and the Mayoral Fund, represents a significant step forward in enhancing our school’s surroundings and contributing to the ecological health of our community. The fosse will not only beautify the area but also serve as a vital ecological asset that will also provide vital educational opportunities for our school and local community.”
