The site is located on the Dock Road in Limerick city

The Land Development Agency has submitted planning for a Large-Scale Residential Development at the ‘Former Limerick Gasworks Site’ on the Dock Road, Limerick.

The proposed development will consist of 285 residential apartment units, 2 retail units and a childcare facility.

The development will see 3  Blocks ranging in height from 1-8 storeys on what has been described as a key city centre site in Limerick.

Labour Councillor Joe Leddin has welcomed today's news.

"First of all, I'm absolutely delighted both as a local councillor and as someone who lives near the former gas works site on the Dock Road", he said this afternoon.

"I've been putting significant pressure on the Land Development Agency for several years now to get their act together and to activate the several key strategic sites that they have in Limerick City that are zoned for residential development. So today's news that the Land Development Agency have submitted a planning application of just shy of 300 apartments and a creche facility, and retail units on the site of the former gas works there on the corner of O'Curry St and the Dock Road is very welcome news".

The plans will consist of the demolition of the vacant former Gas Networks Ireland offices, the partial removal of an existing boundary wall at Dock Road and O’Curry Street; the removal of railings from the top of the existing boundary wall at O’Curry Street; the removal of entrance gates at O’Curry Street; and the removal of entrance piers and gates at Dock Road.

The site has undergone works over recent years to prepare it for use for residential. Cllr Joe Leddin says the site is one of strategic importance in the city.

"This is a particular site that I had particularly put pressure on the LDA to activate because it's less than a kilometre from the town, it's very well strategically located and it offers significant potential in terms of apartments to help resolve the housing crisis and to give young people and in fact those looking to downsize from houses an opportunity to purchase or acquire an apartment that effectively is in the heart of the city. So this is very good news today in Limerick", he said.

The 285 residential aprtments will consist of 142 1 bed apartments, 22 no. 2 bed (3-person) apartments, 105 2 bed (4-person) apartments and 16 3 bed apartments, each with associated private open space in the form of balconies / terraces.
