Find out how you can take part in a new University of Limerick research project that aims to locate Ordnance Survey (OS) bench marks in County Limerick.
'Locating Bench Marks, Preserving Heritage' is a community-driven project led by University of Limerick and supported by The Heritage Council that seeks to locate and photograph surviving bench marks throughout County Limerick.
The project team will hold a series of free information sessions in August for members of the public who are interested in finding out about how they can get involved in locating bench marks.
Dr Catherine Porter and Margaret O'Sullivan from UL will share the story behind the Ordnance Survey Ireland (OSI) bench marks, which first appeared on our landscape nearly 200 years ago and were used right up until the 1990s. These small marks, carved into walls and buildings, helped surveyors measure heights all across the country.
Additionally, there will be a demonstration on how to use the dedicated app and the website to record the benchmarks that people discover.
